I think your strategy is flawed and is more of a real money strategy. I agree with your basic premise that Zynga or any play money site will be made up of horrible players, most of who want action action action and will usually call any amount with any hand. So now you,ve waited an hour and finally you got your monster pocket pair say KK for example. You make a big raise and chances are you,ve got callers not one or two but usually a bunch now all of a sudden KK doesn’t,t look so good with 5 people in the pot.
I think it is a much better strategy to see a lot of cheap flops with marginal hands and hope to flop a monster. I’m not taking about J3 off suit but hands like 57 suited, KT and of course any pair no matter how small. Actually you may want to play even much worse hands, let’s say there are 5 people who have limped in plus the blinds stay in, that’s 7 people in the pot, you are getting 7 to 1 to make the min call and see a flop. If you flop two pair or better or have a monster draw you bet, otherwise check or fold. Of course if there is a raise preflop you want a real hand, and if you are at a table of crazies that go all in every hand preflop then I suggest you move to a new table.
I think you will find this approach to be more “lucrative” and before long you will be rolling in fake money.

Well yes I would hope people are checking pre flop with marginal hands and not outright folding. I think it’s a good sign that if the entire table checks pre flop, they all have jack squat since it’s play money, people tend to bet willy nilly. So for no bets to happen, things must be really bleak for everyone’s hands. Now the problem is on the flop, someone could have made two pair with J3, so now how do you know who is really telling the truth if they make a large bet on a crappy flop? Unless you’ve been paying attention and have been in this spot plenty of times with the same people, well, you don’t know. I’d much rather be first to act in these situations to scare the table away than call someone’s possible bluff by raising their bet in position. But yes, of course check with marginal stuff, don’t auto fold.

First let me say that my intention is to just have a healthy debate on poker strategy and not to put down your ideas which have many merits.
I agree it would be best if you would have the opportunity to observe your opponents over time, but that’s never going to happen on Zynga so I always play with the assumption that I am dealing with novice players who are likely to go all in at any time with any hand.
As far as checking pre-flop only the big blind is able to do that, everybody else has to call and it has been my experience that most time you will have 4 or more players in any given pot. Most of the time these players are happy to just call the big blind and won’t push the action, but if you raise they will call. Most want to see the flop. if it costs 10 great, 100 so be it, 1000 hey it’s play money.
I find it the rare occurrence I can push Zynga players off a hand pre-flop, or at anytime for that matter. I am not comfortable putting a large part of my stack at risk with just one pair. Hence my strategy of limping pre-flop when I can, especially when there are multiple players in the pot. Now am I going to limp with pocket As? of course not, but my raise will be more modest -not with the intention to chase players out because that rarely happens but to sweeten the pot. I also don’t want to commit myself so when some 12 year old from Boise hits 2 pair with his J3 that I can’t lay down my big pocket pair.
But this is a discussion of a one-size-fits-all strategy which I don’t think is ever the best approach. I think if you are at an aggressive table you need to play conservative and at a conservative table you need to be aggressive.
Your approach would be far better against loose aggressive players constantly raising and reraising every hand where mine works better against more loose passive calling station players. I have found the latter to be the majority on Zynga though you will find enough aggressive players as well to make your approach valid.
Ideally I think the Sit and Gos are the easiest of them all to beat – typically 3 or 4 knuckleheads will eliminate each other with crazy bets and calls within the first few hands and then regular poker strategies become a lot more effective at a 4 or 5 handed table.
Cheers, keep the debate going – lol

I have been frustrated in feeling I have been beaten by lesser hands..more than once. I have begun to feel the game pays on the flop and your hand versus later and your hand. Could this be true?m It has happened multiple times. Maybe I’m not seeing their whole hand quickly enough, but frustrating never the less. It doesn’t seem the rules of poker are being observed..the REAL rules.. Three of a kind beating full house..really?

Zynga poker is def not like real life poker in any shape or form. In fact I’d go as far as to say that arcade space invaders is more similar to real life poker than Zynga poker is. To make the game more fun I think the programmers have shortened the odds on super hands by around 95%. I’ve played around 1,500 hands and I’ve seen a royal flush and had one myself, I’ve had about 10 straight flushes and around 70 or so full houses. I’ve also had a pocket pair of jacks after one another. Seeing what complete junk people go all in pre-flop on Zynga poker is just comical. Also people go all in after the river card is layed down with a high card of 5 or even lower. Please don’t get me wrong, Zynga Poker is a great game but that’s all it is. If you want to learn how to play poker for real money then don’t train yourself using Zynga poker play snap instead. Lastly the strategy that works for me is playing several tables in a tournament and if I have a losing streak I give up and play later on that day.

Love your comments, and thanks… I’ve gotten beat with a flush by everything from high card to 3 of a kind. So incredibly frustrating! Seems if you go all in it doesn’t matter what anyone else has. Just against my nature to go all in…ever! But it works for novice players I guess.. And you’re right….slow and steady. Having fun with it though. Would love to meet you at a table sometime

Here's a quick guide on how to change your In-Game avatar. Choose your virtual representation from 20 hot cell shaded characters.
Using your position to your advantage.
Position can play a huge part in hands. This is one tenet of real poker that can still translate over to Zynga play money poker relatively intact without much tweaking.
Realize that if you act last in a hand, you are at a huge advantage. You get to see what the other players are doing with their bets which can reveal a lot about their hand strength, then you get to choose what to do.
If you’re seated in late position during the hand, and the pot hasn’t been raised yet, then you can usually be pretty confident people’s hands suck. It’s surely possible someone is slow playing a pocket bomb hand, though most do not, and people usually play their hands face up so to speak; raising with good, folding with bad. In other words I think 9 times out of ten if someone has pocket aces, they will raise big rather than just check raising. Although to go off on a bit of a strategy tangent here, I think from experience that if I was in early position with pocket aces, it would be better to check knowing that someone is most likely going to raise behind you. You can then check raise and see how many people think you’re bluffing.
If you’re in the big or small blind when its checked around to you, and you have speculative hands like 6-7 suited, a pocket pair or TT, KT, etc., Then just limp in to see a cheap and see what the flop brings you. Careful raising in the blinds because you will be first to act the next street. It’s always to your advantage to act last. If it’s just blind on blind then as the big blind you have the advantage over the small blind as you get to act after they do.
Just be aware that the smarter players out there will know another smart player when they encounter one, and they will know that you know that their betting actions are supposed to dictate their hand strength, but of course because they know this, they can and will intentionally do the opposite of what you expect them to do so they can trap you down the line. It gets tricky. Just understand you need to be aware of possibilities like this, but always first and foremost pay consider your hand strength vs. what you think your opponent’s hand strength could possibly be. Then you can start attempting to discern mind games or play them yourself.
